Elton Fernandez’s Guide to No Make-up Make-up
Dewy, radiant skin is catching the light more than ever this Spring. Drew Barrymore is the latest celebrity to post a #NoMakeupSelfie in honour of her 40th birthday, make-up free ads are trending, and most designers brought face paint to a bare minimum for their Spring 2015 shows. Safe to say, the ‘No Make-up’ look – not new by any means – is back.
For Isabel Marant, Chanel, Stella McCartney and Calvin Klein, this varied between pinky-nude lips and subtly bronzed cheeks. At Marc Jacobs, “no makeup” meant exactly that – no mascara, no foundation, nothing.

The underlying key factor here is a flawless complexion, expert Elton Fernandez explains: “Good skin is mostly genetic, whilst dependent on several other factors. But the ultimate finish of make-up is more dependent on how well skin is hydrated pre-make-up. So prep and prime your skin well before slapping anything else on.”
With more than a decade’s worth of experience working with Indian skin tones, Elton has his bases covered on this stunningly minimalist look. He’s ticked every box from Vogue editorials, to styling Monica Dogra, to working with Bollywood’s best and brides too. He also has a YouTube channel with make-up tutorials to share his secrets. But who, in his opinion, gets it right each time? “I’ve always admired Cate Blanchett for her clean sophisticated yet edgy style, make-up included; and also Meryl Streep. I think these ladies look luxe all the time, without ever trying too hard or looking out of place.”
