Pack Smart, Here’s How to Layer Summer’s Best Pieces
We’re all for getting more wear out of our labels. But when you repeat that much-loved corset you just bought, there’s no reason why shouldn’t put your own inventive spin on it. Plus, layering is the kind of neat styling trick which leaves more room for packing some of your other favourite things. Here’s a look at how to layer summer’s hottest pieces, and to get more looks out of the same key outfits in your wardrobe. Le Mill’s special advisor Shiv Sawhney shares some ideas.
How to layer… a slip dress
A slip dress or a camisole dress is super versatile. By day, layer with a jacket; or as in this case, a printed Alexander McQueen high-low dress worn as a jacket. Even a shirt-dress or a t-shirt teams well. By evening, accessorise this Dries Van Noten slip dress with heels, statement earrings and nothing else and good to go!
How to layer… a pair of trousers
Toughen up a dainty dress with fitted trousers. We’ve turned to a pair by Isabel Marant to go with a ruffled Alexander McQueen dress.
How to layer… a skirt and a dress
There’s much fun to be had with a well-fitted, bodycon Cushnie Et Ochs dress that can be tucked in and worn over a skirt as a top. (Or even a pair of pants!) Contrast the volume with a flared Jonathan Simkhai skirt.
The reverse works too! If you have a pretty hemline to flaunt, as spotted on this Rosie Assoulin dress, wear it with a plisse pleated Balenciaga skirt.
How to layer… a bra top
The best way to wear a bra top to a windy escape is to layer it with a t-shirt. If the summer sun looks punishing, you can always ditch the tee and wear it as is with a pair of shorts or a denim skirt.
How to layer… a jacket
The new way to wear the jacket (as we’ve all seen plenty on Instagram and at Fashion Weeks) is to not wear it all. Sling it over one shoulder, or wear it loose, like you would a wrap or a shawl.
How to layer… a corset top
A Jonathan Simkhai corset top can be layered over a skirt and blouse from Wandering, for a dreamy evening look. Contrast everyday pieces with a dramatic corset for maximum impact. For instance, a denim shirt by Wandering worn with a corset.
How to layer… necklaces or rings
When it comes to necklaces, more is more. Just ensure you’re working with minimal pendants and slender chains of varying lengths. The Line is our go-to option. Also, Angana Nanavaty’s rings – both midi and otherwise – are fun to play with.
