Since introducing her sleek neoprene swimwear in 2009, the American-born fashion stylist turned designer, Lisa Marie Fernandez, has developed her collection into a coveted swimwear brand. Directional, luxurious, and functional, Lisa Marie’s distinctive designs reflect her own lifestyle, inspired by her travels around the world and the women that influence her. Based in New York and London, her personal approach to design includes naming her swimsuits after inspirational friends such as Lauren Santo Domingo, Dree Hemingway and Elisa Sednaoui.

“Swimwear is an emotional purchase for a woman. It is associated with glamorous travel and romance,” says the designer, noting that Mediterranean summers to the South of France, Italy, Turkey and Greece, as well as trips to the island of Bali have long fueled her imagination. “I love to travel and be by the sea, so I created a brand that reflects my own lifestyle.”

Referencing the minimalist scuba styles of the 1990s, Lisa Marie’s curve flattering silhouettes sport her signature colour blocking, exposed zippers and geometric seams that have attracted the attention of fashion editors and personalities around the world. In addition to working with luxe neoprene the designer continues to explore new fabrications, “70 per cent of the collection is now made from Italian fabrications,” While collaborating with designers such as Peter Pilotto on unique looks for their collections, Lisa Marie continues to expand her brand with the introduction of luxurious destination wear that include effortlessly chic shirt dresses in cotton voile, as well as ponchos, tunics, caftans, towels and pochettes made from the softest terry cloth.

With high summer round the corner, we asked Lisa Marie Fernandez the straight goods for a perfect day at the beach.

What’s your preferred beach location?

“I love a relaxed, bohemian beach vibe and prefer when there is an international set. Mykonos has some really stunning beaches and Fokos is my favourite. Fokos on the beach has some of the best food on the island.”

What are the essential elements of your beach wardrobe?

“My favourite wardrobe is destination wear. I have a large collection of designer, vintage, and items I have discovered from all my travels. My beach essentials are Indian cotton caftans, tunics, ponchos. The LMF poncho is super practical because it doubles as a beach towel.

My favourite sandals are ancient Greek sandals or Rondini sandals from St. Tropez… and for a more formal lunch, I will switch to my Céline wedges. I love jewellery paired with swimwear and that includes my antique snake bracelets, and rings as well as my favourite vintage Hèrmes chain around my ankle.

I always bring two swimsuits for the day. I begin the day in a bikini for tanning and switch to a one piece later in the day. My favourite bikinis right now are the LMF terry Genevieve or the Yasmin bikini in Byzantine. My favourite one pieces are the Jasmine maillot in taupe terry or the new Spring 2014 aqua bonded.”

Your label has always referenced the Bond girl, who is your favourite?

“The Bond girl was always very natural, beautiful, sexy and strong but vulnerable. My favourite is Carole Bouquet.”

What kind of beach bag do you carry?

“My new favourite beach bag is the Hèrmes garden party basket. There were only a few made in the world and I was lucky enough to find one.”

What would we find on your summer playlist?

“Rihanna, Beyoncé, Chet Baker, Jhene Aiko, and ’70s classics, jazz, reggae, and some serious hip hop.”

What are your favourite beach nibbles?

“I love simple, Mediterranean food by the sea. Pasta, lentils, eggplant.”
