Memes, But Make It Fashion

In the digital age we live in, there is a meme for everything. And while a viral meme moment does bring in the LOLs, for fashion houses it is also the equivalent of advertising jackpot. The Guardian reported that parent company, Kering, with brands like Gucci, Balenciaga and Saint Laurent under its belt, gets over half its revenue from meme-happy millennials, proving that an omni-present social media does get the cash registers ringing. From Balenciaga’s meme-moment in 2018 (remember the Joey Tribiani-esque layering game seen on the runway), to Twitter being abuzz with ‘Rihanna for Pope’, thanks to her 2018 Met Gala Look, breaking the internet is how snap-happy millennials like their fashion feeds. We take a look at the 2019 moments that had us going #trending.

Winning at twinning by Beyoncé

When Blue Ivy and Beyoncé stepped out in their twinning Alexander McQueen custom crystal chandelier tuxedo dresses, mums and mini me’s everywhere gave a collective ‘Aww’. When it comes to Queen Bey, matching is key. You only have to look at her Ape Shit music video starring husband Jay-Z and her in monotone pantsuits. Both instances led to several Halloween twinning outfit inspirations.

Mind-blowing runway moment, quite literally

Time and again we look to the graduate shows for the fresh crop of inspiration and new-age ideas they offer. The one moment that had our minds blown (get it?), was Central Saint Martin’s Fredrik Tjaerandsen whose shape-shifting balloon dresses transformed into dresses and co-ords on models sashaying down the runway.

Eat your food and wear it too?

Be it Serena Williams resembling your breakfast omelette in her Atelier Versace gown or Katie Holmes’ Zac Posen onion-inspired dress, food was the go-to theme at the Met Gala 2019.

Coz baby, like Katy Perry, you are a firework!

The singer took her job as the host at the Met Gala 2019 very seriously with her Lumière from Beauty and the Beast  (1991) Moschino chandelier outfit. Anyone else also singing “Be Our Guest” in their head? Or like Katy Perry said “you just gotta ignite the light and let it shine…”

Lookin’ Like A Snac

Dries Van Noten’s Fall/Winter 2019 show saw faux collars, wraps and bags resembling a Flamin’ hot Cheeto with its bright orange colour.

The world is your oyster

Proves Cardi B as she wore a vintage Thierry Mugler gown to the 2019 Grammy Awards where she was awarded the Best Rap Album. Thanks to the pearls adorning the outfit, it has garnered comparisons to the oyster in Sandro Botticelli’s famous painting ‘The Birth Of Venus’ and even to Ursula from The Little Mermaid (1989).

First it was the Corgi butt, and now it’s your dog’s nose on a dress. At the Saint Laurent spring/summer 2020, models walked down the runway in black dresses with necklines that resembled dogs noses.
